Pak File Opener

While most of the game can be accessed through the editor, a few features remain outside of the editor. To access these, you'll need to extract the game files. You can do this using lslib v1.11.0 found here. Refer to Larian forums for latest news and updates on the extractor here.

After downloading this tool, open it, and go to the "PAK / LSV Tools" tab. Select .pak file in your game data folder (usually SteamApps/common/Divinity Original Sin 2/Data), and a location to extract it to (not into the game data folder itself.) Most pertinent information will be found in Shared.pak. If extracting Shared.pak, it's a good idea to also extract the Patch pak files, in the order of lowest to highest, into the same folder as you extracted Shared.pak. For example, extract Shared.pak, then Patch.pak, then Patch2.pak, etc. Replace files if asked to do so.

To install the plugin into the 7-Zip installation folder, you need to create the "Formats" subfolder. After that, copy Grit.64.dll or Grit.32.dll (depending on your 7-Zip edition) to that subfolder. If you do that, each time you launch 7-Zip, it will automatically find Grit7z and use it when opening .pak files.

I unzip the .pak using 7zip, I edit the XML file just changing my existing horses color in sublime text. Save. Repack the folders into a .zip with the same name as the original .pak, then rename it from .zip to .pak which changes the file type.

PAK or Package files are compressed archive files, very similar to the ZIP file extension. Multiple files or whole volumes of files can be compressed into one PAK file for easier distributing and use.

PAK Files are usually used by game developers and most probably you may have seen them in games folders. The PAK files used in games may contain graphics, sound, texture, objects or some other game data. However, different games may have different PAK file formats.

The first thing you should try when opening PAK file is to rename the file from .pak to .zip and open it with an application which can open ZIP files. This is the simplest way to open PAK files and works with some of the PAK files.

If the file you received is from a trusted source, you could check the Mac App Store for an application to help with unzipping the file. You can find out more information about downloading apps here: Download apps from the App Store on your Mac

The PAK Explorer allows you to create, browse and modify *.PAK files (compressed archives). The program features the following: export files/folders/archive, import files/folders, drag'n'drop (import from Explorer/Desktop), view files (only works with files that have registered viewers) and support for ZWP archives (Dark Reign).

Files with PAK extension, just like any other file formats, can be found on any operating system. The files in question may be transferred to other devices, be it mobile or stationary, yet not all systems may be capable of properly handling such files.

Problems with opening and working with PAK files are most probably having to do with no proper software compatible with PAK files being present on your machine. This issue can be addressed by downloading and installing WinZip or different compatible program, such as ALZip, QuArK, Dragon UnPACKer. The full list of programs grouped by operating systems can be found above. If you want to download WinZip installer in the most secured manner, we suggest you visit WinZip Computing, S.L. website and download from their official repositories.

You still cannot access PAK files although WinZip is installed on your system? Make sure that the software is up to date. It may also happen that software creators by updating their applications add compatibility with other, newer file formats. If you have an older version of WinZip installed, it may not support PAK format. All of the file formats that were handled just fine by the previous versions of given program should be also possible to open using WinZip.

You closely followed the steps listed in points 1-3, but the problem is still present? You should check whether the file is a proper PAK file. Problems with opening the file may arise due to various reasons.

If the PAK is indeed infected, it is possible that the malware is blocking it from opening. Scan the PAK file as well as your computer for malware or viruses. PAK file is infected with malware? Follow the steps suggested by your antivirus software.

If the PAK file was sent to you by someone else, ask this person to resend the file to you. It is possible that the file has not been properly copied to a data storage and is incomplete and therefore cannot be opened. It could happen the the download process of file with PAK extension was interrupted and the file data is defective. Download the file again from the same source.

Latest versions of programs and drivers may help you solve problems with PAK (Packed) Format files and ensure security of your device and operating system. It is possible that one of the available system or driver updates may solve the problems with PAK files affecting older versions of given software.

VPK (Valve Pak) files are uncompressed archives used to package game content. Valve's post GCF games store materials, models, particles, choreography scenes and many other file types in VPK files.VPKs are also used to distribute mods via the the addoninstaller tool that ships with some games, such as Left 4 Dead 2.

Note: The vpk binary makes VPK files of version 2.0, which are not compatible with games like Left 4 Dead 2 that use an older version of the VPK format (in fact Left 4 Dead 2 will not even start if it detects an unsupported vpk). There is a Python package that can be installed with

On Linux / Unix clients, the vpk file can be found replacing "..\steamapps\common" for "/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/". However, it is named vpk_linux32 instead of vpk.exe. Note: If you installed Steam via Flatpak, the path is slightly different. Look in /.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common

Alternatively, if you're running 64-bit Linux, you can use this script to execute the vpk_linux32 binary successfully. Save this script to "/usr/local/bin/vpk" and set it as an executable in the file's properties, for ease of use:

If you cannot open the PAK file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports PAK among those that are installed on your device.

The inability to open and operate the PAK file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Game Resource Package Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.

If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the PAK file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the PAK file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the PAK file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.PAK) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected PAK file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the PAK file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. PAK) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.

The .pak extension is a short for 'Package' and denotes the generic Resource Package (PAK) file type. PAK files can come in various, often incompatible formats. A .pak file is typically a large binary file, acting as a container of assets (sounds, images, data objects, etc.) used in a game or application.

Note - This step will not remove or change your packed.pak file, but simply extract its content for use as reference material. Unpacked assets may be safely left in ..\assets\ and changes you make to the unpacked assets will have no effect on your game as Starbound will prioritize the use of assets.pak (unless the unpacked _metadata is deleted).

The metadata file (usually named _metadata) is a completely optional file that contains your mod's name, description, and more. If using the Steam Uploader Tool, a basic metadata file will be generated for you. While optional, it is recommended to have at least have a name set in the metadata in case a companion mod ever needs to require or include your mod, and to make your mod more easily identifiable within the game log should any errors occur.

Before publishing your mod, it is recommended to pack it as a single .pak file. This simplifies installation (drop the file in the Starbound/mods/ folder). The alternative is to just put all the files into an archive for distribution which will need to be unpacked by end users to install.

The mod uploader included with the Steam version of Starbound will automatically pack your mod into a pak file when it uploads to the workshop. If you subscribe to your own mod, you may copy this pak from the workshop folder for redistribution through other channels, or you may follow standard packing methods. Linux users may use Proton to launch the mod uploader.

Publishing methods for other services, such as NexusMods, may vary. Please refer to the individual service for more information. Otherwise, your mod's folder or pak file may be distributed as you choose. 2ff7e9595c
